On May 24 a Jeep arrived around 8:00am and we got ready to leave Base Camp. It has been a good feeling to know that we are now moving back to Nepal.

The final push

Finally, the Tibetans decided to fix the rope on May 20. Lhakpa made a decision to move on fast. We left ABC on May 18 and moved up to the North Col into Camp 1 at 7,060m/23,298ft.

May 11 – 17: After having spent 10 days at the Base Camp, finally, on May 11 we walked uphill again 22km/13.75 miles to Advanced Base Camp at 6,400m/21,120ft.

This is a short satellite phone update from ABC. We have been waiting here since May 12. The weather has been very windy on the top of Everest.

May 6 – 10, Getting ready for the final push

May 6 – 8. Not much has changed during the last three days. We are still in Base Camp waiting for better weather and the robes getting fixed. There is not much to do down here beside relaxing, eating and sleeping.

Waiting for the next move up

April 29 – May 5 – Waiting for the next move up

April 29 was a sad day. A Jeep drove up from Tingri to the Base Camp. Jim had packed all his equipment the day before, so he was ready when the Jeep finally arrived after 9:00am. We took a few more pictures and he was on the way to the Tibet-Nepal border.

April 19 – 28 – Meeting Mount Chomolungma and feeling its strengths

We left Base Camp on April 19, at around 8:30am after our main gear had been loaded on the Yaks. The Yaks are, in my opinion, beautiful and strong animals who are able to carry great loads, even when the official number is 40kg.

Getting ready at Base Camp

April 15 – 18 – Getting ready at Base Camp
Our first night at Base Camp was cold, based on the frozen water bottles in our tents the next morning. Well, this may have to be expected at that altitude and I am sure that we will experience much lower temperatures in the coming weeks.

Greetings from base camp

April 12 – 14 – From Nyalam to Base Camp

We left Nyalam in our mini bus on April 12 around 8:30am local time and drove deeper and higher into Tibet. It was a beautiful drive across a dry high altitude valley where we passed a few Tibetan farmer villages with their characteristic architecture.

Tibet to chinese base camp

April 9th to 11th – Trip to Chinese Base Camp
We left Kathmandu around 8:00 am on April 9. All our expedition equipment was loaded into an old TATA bus and at the end there were only a few seats left for the expedition team: Four Sherpas, Jim and I. It was an exciting moment.
